Holocaust Memorial Amsterdam
The Holocaust Memorial of Amsterdam,
also known as
the Dutch Holocaust Memorial of Names,
was inaugurated in September 2021.
It was designed by the famous American architect, artist and professor Daniel Libeskind. He was born in 1946 in Poland to Jewish Holocaust survivors. Libeskind is also known for internationally renowned projects such as the Berlin Jewish Museum, the Danish Jewish Museum in Copenhagen and the reconstruction of the World Trade Center site in New York.
Dutch Holocaust Names Monument – IN MEMORIAM inscription
The Amsterdam Holocaust Memorial consists of four blocks, that represent the Hebrew letters
לזכר
which means IN MEMORIAM, in memory of.
On her Jewish Amsterdam Tour,
while conducting clients through this impressive monument, tourguide historian Naomi Koopmans is always reminded of the Yad VaShem Children’s Memorial in Jerusalem, Israel, where she also worked as a licensed tourguide for many years. Both memorials have a similar maze-like setup, intended to provoke an uncanny feeling and leave the visitor psychologically disoriented.

“The narrative of the Holocaust should not only target the human brain but also,
